Car maintenance advice

1. Oil
With the engine cool, remove the dipstick, wipe it on a tissue, replace and remove again. You can easily see if the level is right, using the level indicators on the dipstick. If the oil is very black or cloudy white – get it checked!

2. Water
With the engine cool, check the water in the radiator or header tank – top up with cold water. At the same time, check the windscreen washer fluid. It helps to use the right fluid (don’t put washing-up liquid in it!), especially in winter, when it should contain antifreeze.

3. Belts, hoses and wiring
While you’ve got the bonnet open, glance around the engine for any sign of worn or damaged hoses, belts and wiring, and make sure all belts are not too tight or too loose – there should be about half an inch (1.5cm) of give.

4. Tyres
Check your tire pressures (don’t forget the spare!) at a petrol station – ideally when the tyres are cold. Keep an eye open for worn tread or damaged sides.

5. Lights
Easier with two people, or you can drive up close to a wall and see that the lights, brake lights and indicators are working.
