What is DriveXpert?

DriveXpert is our telematics insurance aimed at young drivers. You'll get an upfront discount and safe drivers could save money on their insurance renewal.

It all works using the DriveXpert app on your smartphone. So, there's no need to plug a 'black box' into your car. The app monitors a range of environmental and behavioural factors to work out how safe a driver you are. It then assigns you a driving score.

So, whether you're cruising along a country lane or crawling through motorway traffic, the safer you drive, the more you could save.

How do I get DriveXpert?

To get DriveXpert simply begin a quote for Privilege car insurance. If you're 26 or under with a full UK driving licence, you'll be asked if you want a DriveXpert telematics policy. It's that simple.

If you're a little older but have a named driver 26 or under on your policy, then you could get in on the action too, with our DriveXpert plug-in box. If this option is available to you, you'll be prompted when getting a car insurance quote.

The DriveXpert plug-in is only available on cars made after 1996.

What will the app measure?

You can see your driving score at any time on the DriveXpert app. Your score is determined by environmental and behavioural factors, such as:

Behavioural - how you
drive

Speed

Your speed relative to other road users. In general, if you're flowing with the traffic and at a similar speed to other road users, you'll get a better score than if you're driving too fast.

Smooth driving

How you anticipate traffic flow. Avoiding extreme acceleration and hard braking will lead to smooth driving and a better score.

Environmental - when and where you drive

Time of day

The risks posed by other drivers on the road at the same time. For example, late night journeys are riskier than others.

Road risk

The complexity of the roads you use. This includes the number of junctions and lanes, and how many accidents there have been in the past.

Mobile use

Your mobile phone usage when behind the wheel. The app tracks all instances of phone calls and any physical use of the phone that take place throughout your journey. Our mobile use score takes into account the mental and physical distraction caused by being on your phone while driving.

Important information

  • Downloading and registering the app

The DriveXpert app is only compatible with Android or Apple smartphones. As the main driver on the policy it's your responsibility to download the app and register within seven days of your policy start date, otherwise we reserve the right to cancel your policy. This may affect your ability to take out insurance in the future. Please make sure you're registering with the same personal details that were used to buy your DriveXpert policy. The app will start collecting and scoring data as soon as you register. Additional named drivers are not required to use the app. If you have any problems, please contact us on 0345 8786411 or email support@privilege.com.

  • Recording your journeys

It's a requirement of the DriveXpert policy that you record all journeys where you're driving your vehicle, so they can be scored. This means your phone's location services must be turned on. Through the use of an integrity score, If we believe that journeys or journey data is deliberately not being recorded or being manipulated, we may consider this to be a fraudulent act, in which case we will cancel your policy and we may keep any premium you’ve paid. If we don’t detect any recording activity (driver or passenger) for 14 consecutive days and you don’t notify us, we reserve the right to cancel your policy. This may affect your ability to purchase insurance in the future. If you know you won’t be driving and recording a journey for a period of time, then you must let us know beforehand. Call us on 0345 8786411 or email support@privilege.com.

  • Journeys where you're not the driver

Once registered, the DriveXpert app will record and analyse your journey data about your driving behaviour. All your journey data will be collected and retained by the app, whether you're the driver or a passenger. The app will also auto tag your journey with a mode of transportation it thinks is most likely. If you were a passenger in a car or using another mode of transportation, you can edit the tag on the journey to reflect this and exclude the journey from affecting your driving score. You have up to 72 hours after a journey to edit the tag. After this, the tag against that journey is submitted and cannot be edited.

  • How do I use the DriveXpert app?

The DriveXpert app works in the background to capture journey details when you're in motion, so always make sure your mobile device is with you when you're on a journey.

  • How much data will the DriveXpert app use?

Travelling 1,000 miles at an average speed of 40mph would use roughly 60mb of data. To reduce data usage there’s an option to only upload journeys once you’re connected to wifi. A small amount of mobile data will still be used even if the uploads are sent via wifi as the GPS uses data.

  • What happens if I don't record a journey?

It's a requirement of the DriveXpert policy that you record all journeys when you’re driving your vehicle, so they can be scored. If we don't detect any recording activity (driver or passenger) for 14 consecutive days and you don’t notify us, we reserve the right to cancel your policy. This may affect your ability to purchase insurance in the future.

  • What happens if I break the speed limit?

We strongly advise all drivers to obey the Highway Code and drive in accordance with the law. However, your score isn't calculated based on your speed of travel in relation to the speed limit.

  • Will DriveXpert affect the cost of my insurance policy at renewal?

There are many factors which could increase or decrease the cost of your insurance at renewal. However, your DriveXpert driving score will only be used to work out what discount – if any – will be applied to your renewal price.
